These space-time globes include tectonic reconstructions of the Earth’s gravity and magnetic fields, and several models of long-wavelength surface dynamic topography through time, including the interactive plotting of vertical motion histories at selected locations. The portal is specifically designed to visualize models of the Earth through geological time. The portal also features globes portraying seafloor geology and a global data set of marine magnetic anomaly identifications. The globes include a visualization of a high-resolution global digital elevation model and the vertical gradient of the global gravity field, highlighting small-scale seafloor fabric such as abyssal hills, fracture zones and seamounts in unprecedented detail. The globes use WebGL for hardware-accelerated graphics and are cross-platform and cross-browser compatible with complete camera control. The portal allows fast interactive visualization of global geophysical and geological data sets, draped over digital terrain models. The GPlates Portal () is a gateway to a series of virtual globes based on the Cesium Javascript library. Here, we describe our efforts to bring to life our studies of the Earth system, both at present day and through deep geological time. These innovations open up new avenues for how scientists communicate and share data and ideas with each other and with the general public. The pace of scientific discovery is being transformed by the availability of ‘big data’ and open access, open source software tools. ![]()

When you pull up the map, you’ll only get a vague indication of where Tchia is on it. Tchia goes one step further by pulling back on the map’s utility. Like Sable or Breath of the Wild, there’s always something within your sightline that’ll encourage you to explore. While there are specific story objectives to complete, Tchia is also structured in a way that allows players to fully immerse themselves in a foreign landscape. That’s just one of the many things players can do while venturing across New Caledonia. Players can earn new songs to use with the ukulele by completing rock-balancing puzzles scattered across the open world. Image used with permission by copyright holder The results of these tunes range from simply changing the time of day to giving Tchia a buff that allows her to breathe underwater infinitely. While you can play whatever you want, specific melodies have additional effects, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time style. Oh, and did I mention you can play the ukulele? Because Tchia features a fully playable ukulele.Īt a couple of narrative beats during my preview, I encountered rhythm-game-like segments as Tchia performed specific songs, but I could also play the ukulele at any time while I was exploring if I wanted to. Tchia makes exploration feel fantastic, as you’ll immediately feel like you have all the tools to make this world your oyster. I could then let go of that glide to do tricks in the air or soul-jump into an animal, allowing me to explore the world in a new way. Although I had some objectives, it was just as fun to climb up the trees near the starting town and fling Tchia into a glide to travel a longer distance. The story was fairly light in what I played, but the gameplay really shined. ![]() I had the chance to play some main story missions during my preview where Tchia befriends a young girl and explores one of the game’s biggest islands, completing various objectives and even hunting for treasure. These each add even more gameplay gimmicks that enhance exploration and help Tchia solve puzzles. While players have the stamina to climb up buildings and trees, swing from them, and even swim, dive, and sail around these islands, they can also soul-jump into lots of different animals and objects. Tchia is out on March 21st for PlayStation 4, PS5, and PC via Epic Games Store.Tchia is an open-world game following a little girl (named Tchia) trying to find her missing father on an archipelago inspired by New Caledonia, a tropical archipelago in the Pacific Ocean where some of the game’s developers are from. The Oléti can be pre-ordered via the Epic Games Store or on the PlayStation Store starting today. The dev says that this is “a celebratory package that will add a selection of cosmetic items inspired by Kepler Interactive’s family of games. From the outstanding traversal mechanics and the ability to Soul Jump, to the sense of exploration and freeing nature it offers, I loved my time with it. Using this ability, her trusty slingshot and a magical ukulele, players will guide Tchia as she bravely frees her home from the clutches of this tyrannical god.Īnyway, Tchia is a game we previewed recently, with Chris White saying: “Tchia has a lot of good going for it. Along the way, Tchia will unlock her own otherworldly abilities, letting her soul-jump into animals and objects found across her home in order to solve puzzles, traverse freely and avoid danger. ![]() ![]() As players traverse this fictional land inspired heavily by the island nation of New Caledonia, they’ll be introduced to a variety of new cultures, traditions and languages. When her father is abducted and her home is taken over by Meavora, the archipelago’s tyrannical ruler, Tchia, the game’s heroine, embarks on a grand adventure fueled by mystical wonder and disarmingly tender moments. ![]() One tester, who wore a women’s size 8 in the 19s (and had been wearing the Ghost 13 for her training), said she felt “fast and strong” in them. The Glycerin aims for smooth heel-to-toe transitions and an easy ride, and the 20 delivers. The supportive-yet-flexible mesh upper and soft interior pair for an almost slipper-like experience on the foot in comparison with, for instance, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22, which has a bit more structure in general. (A tester who wore the 19 in a men’s size 12½ found them to be a tad unstable running downhill, due to their height.) The 20 is a soft shoe with ample cushioning that doesn’t feel squishy. The Glycerin 20 ( women’s, men’s) has a 10 mm drop, a rather high stack height, and a wide sole that gestures ever so slightly toward a platform-much like the 19s did. The Brooks Glycerin was billed by Runner’s World as a shoe that gives the popular Ghost a run for its money. If you pay any more than that, you’re getting into shoes meant for niche purposes. Price also matters, so we capped our recommendations at $150. But because some runners prefer less heel cushioning and a flatter sole, we made sure to retain a few options with lower and no heel-to-toe drop, too. Most of the shoes we kept on the list fit that description. Traditionally, most running shoes have a sole that’s 10 mm to 12 mm thicker at the heel than at the forefoot. We also considered heel-to-toe drop (the difference in the thickness of the sole from the heel to the toe). In general, we favored lightweight models, though our experts pointed out that shoes are getting lighter and lighter across the board. Shoes that promised both features caught our attention. Often these criteria are at odds with each other: Extra cushioning is likely to absorb the impact of each running stride, rather than give you much rebound. We looked for shoes described as being both cushioned and responsive (that is, ones with the “rebound” effect underfoot). They should tie securely, without slipping.) A heel-lock lacing style can keep feet from sliding up in back, whereas nontraditional toe lacing can provide more spreading room in front. (Take note of the material the laces are made of, as well as their shape and general feel. Laces that are too tight or too loose-in the right or wrong places-can significantly affect the feel of the shoes. You should also play around with the laces. “Ask yourself, ‘Which shoes were you least aware of?’ and buy those,” said running coach Melanie Kann. To compare, put one model on one foot and another on the other foot, and do a lap around the store. Try on a bunch of shoes, and then go back to the pairs that seemed the most comfortable. If it’s possible, however, we recommend that you first get fitted by a knowledgeable salesperson at a specialty running shop. To help inspire your search, we have recommendations for women’s and men’s styles and sizes, including dependable neutral trainers, stability shoes with various amounts of cushion, and a low-drop option.Ĭompare shoes head to head: You may choose to order a few pairs of shoes online, with the intent of returning the ones that don’t fit. And if you’re ordering from home, consider retailers that have solid return policies, such as Zappos, REI, Running Warehouse, Road Runner Sports, and Fleet Feet. To find your best running shoes, you’ll likely need to try on several different pairs, either at your local running store (where you can leverage staff expertise to help you find the ideal fit) or in your living room (if you prefer to shop online). We take a look at the two main running-shoe types (neutral and stability), the anatomy of a running shoe, and how a shoe should fit. ![]() The focus here is on go-to shoes for everyday runs. Speed?
